International Collaboration

Our work fills knowledge gaps needed to understand and respond to change in Africa and globally.

Work at the Nansen-Tutu Centre for Marine Environmental Research also supports international collaborations, enhancing global efforts to monitor and protect the world’s oceans.

Alongside its signatory partners from Norway, France and the US, the centre supports better ocean states knowledge, marine environmental and ecosystem modelling, research and capacity-building, and the oceans’ roles in climate and global teleconnections – the relationship between climate anomalies in different parts of the world.

There is a worldwide need to understand, model and predict conditions in the ocean,” said Professor John Field on the launch of the Nansen-Tutu Centre for Marine Environmental Research.

“The partners will develop a system to routinely collect data via satellite and direct observations in the ocean – what we call operational oceanography.”

Our International Collaboration

 Joint research projects
Supporting joint research and development activities between scientists and students from the partner institutions.

Student and researcher exchange
Enabling the exchange of visiting scientists and students between the participating institutions, including co-supervision of MSc and PhD students, and joint capacity building.

Field work & ship-based research
Promoting joint participation in field work and full integration and ship-based research opportunities with operational oceanography components.

Capacity building and workshops
Developing capacity through joint courses, workshops, training and research schools with students from across Europe and Africa.
