Together with SAEON and the CSIR, the Nansen-Tutu Centre hosted the 5th GODAE OceanView Coastal Ocean and Shelf Seas Task Team (COSS-TT) International Coordination Meeting (COSS-ICM5).
The mission goal of the Coastal Ocean and Shelf Seas Task Team (COSS-TT) is to work in coordination with GOVST and GOOS towards the provision of a sound scientific basis for sustainable multidisciplinary downscaling and forecasting activities in the world coastal oceans. The task team fosters international collaboration to advance science and applications on coastal and shelf dynamics, open ocean processes that control shelf break exchanges, as well as land-sea interactions through estuaries and inlets.
50 international scientists attended the meeting which was held at the Breakwater Lodge in Cape Town from 3-7 April 2017. Dr Marjolaine Krug (a Nansen-Tutu Centre Associate Researcher) gave an invited keynote presentation on the “Challenges of observing coastal ocean and shelf sea processes”, highlighting the need for enhanced state-of-the-art observation systems such as gliders and satellite remote sensing capabilities in order coherently observe important dynamic processes affecting the coastal ocean and shelf sea evident in South Africa’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
Participants of the 5th GODAE OceanView Coastal Ocean and Shelf Seas Task Team (COSS-TT) International Coordination Meeting (COSS-ICM5) held in Cape Town from 3-7 April, 2017.
The GODAE OceanView Science Team’s (GOVST) mission is to define, monitor and promote actions aimed at coordinating and integrating research associated with multi-scale and multi-disciplinary ocean analysis and forecasting systems, thus enhancing the value of GODAE OceanView outputs for research and applications. Over the next decade the science team will provide international coordination and leadership in:
- The consolidation and improvement of global and regional analysis and forecasting systems
- The progressive development and scientific testing of the next generation of systems covering biogeochemical and ecosystems and extending from the open ocean into shelf seas and coastal waters
- The exploitation of the capability in other applications (weather forecasting, seasonal and decadal prediction, climate change detection and its coastal impacts, etc.)
- The assessment of the contribution of the various components of the observing system and the scientific guidance for improved design and implementation of the ocean observing system
GODAE OceanView coordinates the development of new capabilities through active working groups, the GOV Task Teams (or TTs). These teams focus on a number of different topics relevant to GODAE OceanView and the wider ocean science communities.
There are 6 TTs:
- Coastal Ocean and Shelf Seas Task Team
- Coupled Prediction Task Team
- Data Assimilaiton Task Team
- Intercomparison and Validation Task Team
- Marine Ecosystem Analysis and Prediction Task Team
- Observing System Evaluation Task Team
